Gametogenesis and larval settlement of the invasive fanworm, Sabella spallanzanii

The European fanworm, Sabella spallanzanii, is an invasive species populating harbours along the southern coast of Australia. This sessile polychaete has been shown to impact epifaunal and bacterial communities in the areas it invades. Current management of this species has been ineffective at preventing its spread, as individuals have now been identified as far north as Botany Bay. My research looks into the reproductive periodicity of Sabella spallanzanii and substrate preferences for larval settlement. Better understanding of spawning timings and environmental triggers will aid in the management of this invasive species to control its population size and spread.
